Commissaries on Okinawa

While I wanted to kick off my blog with a positive note this has to be said, while the Commissaries offer a convenience of offering groceries at American prices and on base, I haven’t been impressed with the way they keep their produce and their limited selection of “Mexican” foods.  Of course being out here you miss a lot of things, family, friends, Panera Bread… At the top of my list was beautiful produce and groceries.  I’ve been able to find a few great places for produce, mainly the Aeon at American Village and the farmers market at Naval Kadena which also has a nice little seafood market.  But Mexican food has been kind of a bust.  It’s always a mad dash to the Jalapeños at the commissary when they show up once in a blue moon and I’ve already given up on Hominy and Maza for Tamales.  It’s the little things.

FYI, I don’t recommend buying the onion’s or the garlic at the Commissaries.  Go to the farmers market or Aeon for those… seriously. 🙂
